Barbara was born February 28, 1943 in Denver, Colorado. She lived with her parents Chauncey and Eleanor Notz at the same home in Englewood, Colorado until she was married.
She had one brother, William W. Notz who now lives in Seattle, Washington. Her life desire from early childhood was to get to know God. She tried to find Him even as a child by visiting various churches with friends from her neighborhood and school. By God’s sovereign will she made friends with Jackie Orange who took her to church with her, and it was there that the gospel story became real to her. At 10 years of age she accepted Christ as her savior by simple faith in Him and that became a life pursuit for her in serving her Savior. She was athletic, an excellent student, and loved especially going to Sunday school and youth activities at what is now Littleton Bible Chapel, in Littleton, Colorado. It was at a Church picnic at that church that she first met Dick Nohr. She was only 16 years old at the time, but her parents gave her permission to date him because they knew his parents who came from the same small town, Kanarado, Kansas, and they thought the Nohr’s were people who could be trusted with their daughter. Their relationship developed over the next 4 years, and in 1963 they were married after Barbara had completed one year of college at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Her married life was one of devotion to her family, her church, and service to her savior. Her three children Aleta, Julie, and Rick came along in that order and by 1970 she was totally engaged in their upbringing, being active in her church, and supporting Dick in his business responsibilities which required him to travel many days a month. In 1967 we all moved from Littleton to Houston for the first time. We established fellowship with a group of Christians who now are associated with First Colony Bible Chapel in Sugar Land, Tx. During 5 moves to Albuquerque, and Billings, Montana and each time back to Sugar Land she was able to acclimate and protect her family, participate in church activities, and travel to some exotic places with Dick and some not so exotic. Her home was always open to friends and those missionaries and church speakers who came to love her, her cooking, and her hospitality. They always felt at home.
Barbara has been blessed with 9 grandchildren, Katie Rivera, Allison Holman, Joshua Johnston, Andrea Cooper, Julianna Johnston, Natalie Nohr, Nathan Nohr, Nolan Nohr and Abigail Counts. She also has been blessed with 5 great grandchildren. Andrew Cooper, John Holman, Joseph Cooper, Grace Rivera, and James Holman. Needless to say she loved them very much.
Barbara loved all the manifestations of God’s creation she saw in plants and animals. She grew many plants that filled her home and yard and became the resident expert on plant care and feeding in her sphere of influence. She loved music, especially hymns, and loved playing the piano for our enjoyment. She and Dick were married for 56 years and was a lung cancer survivor for 26 years.
The last days of her life she was cared for very lovingly by the staff of Houston Hospice for which her family is very grateful.
Gifts in her memory can be given to First Colony Bible Chapel, in Sugar Land, Texas.
