Bernie Ray Ellison, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Daingerfield, Texas, Bernie was the third youngest of ten siblings, a proud son of East Texas whose life would take him across the globe.
A graduate of the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Bernie’s career in engineering led him to international assignments in Saudi Arabia, Seoul, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates—places he cherished and spoke of fondly. His work was a passport to the world, but his heart remained rooted in family and community.
Bernie proudly served his country as a Navy veteran, embodying a spirit of discipline and service that carried through his entire life. In his later years, he became a world-class senior Olympian, competing in multiple field events and earning numerous first-place medals across national track meets. His athleticism and determination earned him a national ranking and the admiration of many.
Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Bernie was a man of many passions. He was an avid traveler, a skilled bridge player, a devoted day lily aficionado, and a keen stock market enthusiast. His curiosity and zest for life were evident in everything he pursued.
Bernie is preceded in death by his parents, many siblings, and his son, Christopher Jay Ellison. He is survived by his sister, Theda Cook as well as his loving wife of 69 years, Helen Louise Ellison; his daughters, Susan Ellison Ketterer and Kim Ellison Diefenderfer (Jason); his granddaughters, Alexa Brooke Ketterer and Alexandra Lane Diefenderfer.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team of doctors and nurses at MD Anderson who fought valiantly for Bernie’s health, and to his devoted home-care nurses, Cora and Grace, who became cherished members of the Ellison family.
Special thanks also go to his Cypress on the Green neighbors and friends, who enriched Bernie’s life over the past thirty years.
In his final years, Bernie found great joy in the companionship of his loyal dog, Yogi, who remained faithfully by his side.
Bernie’s legacy is one of strength, adventure, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
