Funeral services for Charles (Chuck) J. Fix, 82, formerly of Sugar Land, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2026 at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 3100 Sweetwater Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77479. A rosary will be said Thursday, June 25, 2026 (his 83rd birthday), starting at 6:30 p.m. at The Settegast Company Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Fwy., Sugar Land.
Fix died peacefully Monday, June 15, 2026, from complications of end-stage Alzheimer’s Disease. He lived a full life involving family, friends, multiple adventures in the family’s “Green Machine” VW camper van and applying his many skills to four distinctly challenging jobs.
Born June 25, 1943 and raised in Irvington, N.J., he received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1966 and accepted Shell’s offer of a job in Houston. He said he was willing to move far away from his home base because when he stepped off the plane for his interview in mid-March, he loved that the 3-piece wool suit he was wearing was much too hot for Houston. His 26-year Shell career was spent helping the company develop and use information technology to improve processes, including leading the team that developed Shell’s pay-at-the-pump capability.
Following his first retirement, he was recruited to fill an information technology administrative position at Rice University. Never daunted by challenges, he took charge of the project to install computer connections to all student rooms in campus housing. He also solved an accounts payable problem for the business office by instituting a purchase card program.
His last two careers were at Houston Baptist University. While still at Rice, he was invited to become lecturer in undergraduate and graduate classes in the HBU College of Business and Economics. He tapped into teaching skills he developed in UH classrooms after he received his graduate degree, adapting them for the newer school’s classroom technology.
When he left Rice, a colleague persuaded him to join the HBU faculty fulltime. Shortly before Hurricane Ike hit in 2008, he was asked to reduce his teaching load and serve as chief information officer. When the roof of the administration building, which held all the HBU servers, was damaged in the storm, the school’s centralized computer functions had to be moved off campus. He planned and led that problem-solving effort for months until repairs at HBU were completed
Fix retired (finally) in 2014. For almost 10 years he “worked” from the couch with his laptop, indulging in his passion for successfully buying and selling stocks and options until his cognitive decline took that away.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Janet Glazar, whom he married in 1965, as well as his parents, Charles Sr. and Agnes Fix and many other relatives and friends.
He is survived by his second wife, Julie Brasel Fix, whom he married in 1992, daughter Barbara Fix Pestritto (RJ) of Jonesville MI, son, Michael Fix (Valerie) of Colorado Springs CO, stepdaughter Jennifer Hicks McDowell of Katy, sister, Barbara Fix Rapczynski of Freehold NJ, his nephew Craig Rapczynski (Jamie) also of Freehold, and his niece Linda Morris (Bill) of Stafford VA.
Twelve grandchildren plus a new granddaughter-in-law (Therese) also will carry memories of time spent with “Goofy Grandpa,” a persona he worked hard to create and maintain. Most of the grandkids were taught how to dive off the side of the pool safely and to play chess (his favorite game that he played excellently until he lost that to Alzheimer’s). Anthony, Carmelina, Sebastian, Angelo, Dominic, Mariana, Vincent and Francesca Pestritto, Alexander and Chloe Fix, Scarlett and Holden McDowell will not likely forget Grandpa’s strict rule: no one leaves the table until everyone is finished. That edict resulted in sometimes lengthy dialogues among children and grandparents that usually ended in laughter and ice cream.
In lieu of floral tributes, the family respectfully suggests memorials be made to Strake Jesuit Crusader Fund, (8900 Bellaire Blvd. Attn: Advancement Department, Houston, Texas 77036 or for online contributions visit strakejesuit.org and choose Tribute gift, in memory of Charles Fix); or to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org (click through to Donor-Advised Fund)
Fix will be buried next to Janet in the family plot in New Jersey.
