David Coe was never without his coffee cup, he finally set it down on August 9th at 8:27PM. He passed away knowing he was loved and surrounded by his family. Dave was nine of eleven in a large Irish Catholic family who many jokingly called the “Coe Mafia.” With his passing, the gang is reunited in its entirety.
Dave grew up in the small town of Laingsburg, Michigan and attended public schools for his primary and secondary education. Upon high school graduation in 1962, he attended Alexian Brothers School of Nursing in Chicago followed by St Francis School of Anesthesia in La Croix, Wisconsin. Shortly after Board Certification 1966, David received his commission and joined the US Navy Medical Corps where he proudly served his country as a 1st generation American.
His 55-year career in anesthesia would always be complemented by the experience he gained in Vietnam. Dave said, “passing gas was never work” and truly enjoyed getting to know his patients. He utilized his trauma anesthesia experience at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and crop dusted his way down to MD Anderson in Houston, Texas in 1992. After retiring in 2008, being a friendly Walmart Greeter was not in his wheelhouse. He established DOCs Lights Out and continued to administer anesthesia for another 15 years working in the surgery center setting.
David Coe was a complex man with simple taste. As a DIY extraordinaire, no task was too big for him to tackle. All he needed was his coffee, duct tape, 409, worn jeans, leather slip ons, a few prayers, and multiple trips to the Home Depot. His work ethic was unmatched and his willingness to help others never faded. Dave’s life path was not easy, filled with many challenges along the way; regardless of the circumstance, he chose to endure and remain compassionate, empathetic, and loving.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Sarah, Siblings: John (Margo), Mary (Al) Schikorra, James (Leola), Joseph, Thomas, Ann Archer (Larry), Michael, Sarah Freeman (Stewart) Vincent, and Patrick.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Pam and their children: Matthew (Eva), David II (Ashley “Ley”) Joshua, Emily Hickman (John), grandchildren: Keoni, Waid, Mars, and Miles and bonus grandchildren: Caleb and Mischa. He will also be remembered by his sister-in-law Diana Archuleta and all of his “favorite” nieces and nephews.
