Edward Carlisle Melvin Curtice was born July 2, 1952, in Washington, D.C. to Kolbe Murray Curtice, Sr (Virginia) and Carlisle Bailey Curtice (Alabama). The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1965 where he attended St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and School in Meyerland. After graduation, he attended the University of Houston until he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1974-1976 on the U.S.S. Nimitz, America’s second nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. His last tour of duty in the Navy had him stationed in the Azores Islands off the coast of Portugal. This final tour allowed him numerous opportunities to explore countries and cities throughout Europe. Following an Honorary Discharge, he returned to Houston and began his career at Texas Instruments Inc. Years later he was hired by Motorola Company and relocated to Austin, Texas. In Austin, he met and married Denise Ellison and instantly and joyfully became a stepfather to Ashley and Lyndsey.
Melvin’s health began to deteriorate from diabetes and its other associated health challenges. He moved to Sugar Land in December 2021 and lived independently until January 2022. Despite all his health challenges, Melvin always maintained a sharp wit and a deep love for his family.
Melvin is survived by two brothers, Kolbe Curtice and his wife Gwen of Sugar Land, TX, and James Curtice and his wife Louise of Houston, TX, and his sister, Page Curtice Guardabassi and her husband St. George of Ft Lauderdale, Florida. His extended family includes his nephew Brian Murray Curtice (Roberta) of Washington, TX., nieces Erin Curtice Knape (Hal) of Houston, TX, Mallory Curtice of Fort Worth, TX, Caroline Guardabassi in London, England, Catherine Guardabassi Grisetti (John Michael) of Birmingham, Alabama, as well as great-nieces and nephews. His pride and joy were his two stepdaughters, Ashley Nicole and Lyndsey, and his two grandsons Jaxon Taylor and Gavin Thompson, whom he talked about with great pride and excitement.
A Memorial service will be held for Melvin this Friday at 11:00 AM, June 24, 2022, at Second Baptist Church at 6400 Woodway Drive, Houston, Texas in the chapel on the Woodway side of the campus.
