George Holland Plummer, 76, crossed into Eternity on February 4, 2023 after a valiant fight against multiple myeloma. He was at home in Missouri City, Texas, with his beloved wife and daughter at his side.
George was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the eldest son of John Henry Plummer and Alfreda (Holland) Plummer. After a childhood in Belfast and Singapore, he moved to England, where he earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University) and joined British Petroleum (BP). While in England, he met the great Love of his life, Jennifer Burr, a nursing student. Marriage and two children followed within a few years. In 1975, BP wanted George to work in the Shetland Islands while his young family remained behind in southern England. Instead, he joined Mecon, a Dutch engineering firm, and moved with his family to Ahwaz in southwestern Iran. He spent four happy years in Ahwaz, exploring the desert and learning to love the people and culture. After the Plummers were evacuated from Ahwaz during the Iranian Revolution, he joined Mobil Oil and continued his peripatetic career as a cost engineer and project manager. Over 20+ years with Mobil, he lived in the United States, Norway, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela, and traveled extensively on every continent except Antarctica. In 2002, he retired from the now merged ExxonMobil and joined Stone and Webster Consultants, performing inspections of oil industry construction projects around the world.
The most important things in George’s life were his Christian faith and his family. His faith was never blind; he thought deeply about Christianity and its implications for his life and work. He and Jennifer were long-time members of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Missouri City, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, elder, and treasurer. He was a faithful and loving husband, gentle and dedicated father, and doting grandfather. He loved the Texas gulf coast and spent many happy weeks with Jennifer at the second house they purchased on Galveston Island. His grandchildren adored their summer holidays at the beach with Grandma and Grandpa. George also loved dogs, particularly English bull terriers. George and Jennifer’s lives were enriched by several bull terriers and pit bulls over the years, and they were active volunteers with Texas Gulf Coast Bull Terrier Rescue, transporting and fostering many dogs in need.
George’s artistic outlet was photography, and he was rarely seen without a camera in his hand. During the 1970s and 1980s, he amassed thousands of 35 mm slides, but he was an early and enthusiastic adopter of digital photography. His favorite subjects were his growing grandchildren, the people and places he encountered in his travels, and the birds and environment of the gulf coast.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Jennifer (Burr) Plummer, his brother Alan Plummer, son Nicholas (Jennifer Peifer), daughter Natasha ( Anthony Torr), and grandchildren Tristan Plummer, Nora Plummer, and Daphne Torr.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Missouri City, Texas at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders, Smile Train, or the Rescue Welfare Trust Fund of the Bull Terrier Club of America.
