Haynie Wayne Copeland

Born on February 25, 1936, in Buffalo, Texas, Wayne was the older child of Edward Haynie Copeland and Agnes Louise Copeland. He grew up in a rural Texas town during the Great Depression and World War II era, experiences that instilled the values of faith, hard work, humility, and service that defined his life.

After graduating from Buffalo High School in 1954, Wayne served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. Upon his discharge, he began a 35-year career with Texaco, retiring in 1994. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and faced the disease with remarkable courage and resilience, overcoming tremendous challenges and embracing life with unwavering determination for more than three decades.

Wayne was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Nancy Ann Wellman Copeland, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage until her passing in 2015. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy in life was his family. He coached Little League baseball, volunteered extensively with Westbury National Little League, and instilled in generations of family members a love of faith, music, service, and community.

A faithful follower of Jesus Christ, Wayne was an active member of Cornerstone Methodist Church, where he faithfully served through numerous ministries. Known for his compassion, he regularly prepared and distributed "hand-up" bags to people experiencing homelessness, believing that even small acts of kindness could make a difference.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Ann Copeland; his brother, William "Billye" Edward Copeland; his father, Edward Haynie Copeland; and his mother, Agnes Louise Copeland.

He is survived by his sons, Michael Wayne Copeland and his wife Sherry, and David Ray Copeland and his wife Kim; his grandsons, Spencer Ryan Copeland (fiancée Nastaran Biriji), Cameron Daniel Copeland (wife Jia LeBlanc Copeland), David Ray Copeland Jr., and Chris Copeland; his great-granddaughter, Jenevieve "Jivvy" Eden Copeland; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends.

Wayne's life was measured not simply by the years he lived, but by the faith he shared, the family he loved, and the lives he touched. His legacy endures in all who were blessed to know him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Cornerstone Methodist Church, 18081 West Rd, Houston, Texas 77095, on August 1, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

A Committal Service will be held at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077, US, on August 3, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
