HERTHA LANGE PROSKAUER, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2015. She was born and raised in Hildesheim, Germany. She attended business school and worked as a secretary. She lived through a difficult part of history, born on June 13, 1917 while WWI was still going on. She lived through the Depression and then survived WWII. Her home was bombed and the family forced to live in the forest for a time. She eventually moved to Goslar, Germany where she met her future husband, Hermann Proskauer. Hermann was a holocaust survivor and eager to begin a new life in America. In 1952, with their young daughter, Monica, they immigrated to the United States.
With very little help, they learned a new language and the culture of their new home. They settled in Houston, Texas and welcomed their second daughter, Susan, in 1953. Hertha and Hermann were married 49 years.
Hertha enjoyed being a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a very active person and not one to be idle. She took good care of her home, making sure everything was neat and tidy. She liked to bake apfel kuchen. She had the most pleasure when she was outside working in her garden and tending her flowers. You would usually find her outside even mowing her lawn when well into her eighties.
She loved people to come by and chat and have a cup of coffee with her.
Her favorite relaxation was going fishing with her husband, Hermann at Lake Houston. For several years, they enjoyed a little cabin there. Hertha was a devoted wife taking care of Hermann during his last days of illness. She was a concerned mother and loving grandmother to her grandchildren .They brought her much joy.
Hertha was preceded in death by her husband, Hermann Proskauer; father, Karl Lange; mother, Hermine Timmerman-Lange; and sisters, Alma Krawutschke (Robert), and Anni Jarasinsky (Fritz). She is survived by her daughters, Monica Criswell (Martin), and Susan Brubaker (Eric); and her grandchildren, Laura Criswell, Marc Brubaker (Melissa) and David Brubaker (Kristin). She is also survived by extended family in Hannover and Hildesheim, Germany.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Christ United Methodist Church, 3300 Austin Parkway, Sugar Land.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Caregivers for Seniors, Barton House, and Quality Living for their loving kindness to Hertha.
