Jean Eileen Toner was born on February 27, 1932 in New Orleans, Louisiana and passed away at her home on August 11, 2018, surrounded by her family. A devout Catholic, Jean cherished her family, friends and lived a full life. She enjoyed practicing her faith, art, music, photography, gardening, her many trips to the beach, and sharing time with her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and many friends.
After attending business college, Jean began working at Loyola University where she met her future husband of 58 years Joe Toner. They married in 1953, were blessed with five children then the family moved to Houston in 1964. After raising her children, Jean worked for 14 years for the Diocese of Galveston – Houston in the Office of Vocations alongside her husband. She especially enjoyed assisting the priests, nuns, and seminarians as well as the opportunity to attend daily mass and participate in the Theresians prayer group. Upon retirement from the diocese, Joe and Jean were given a trip to the Vatican arranged by their friends at the Chancery.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Naomi Schmidt, husband Joe, and daughter Anne. She is survived by her daughter Mary Rangel and husband Willie; sons Joseph and wife Elizabeth, Stephen and wife Beth, and David; grandchildren Joe, Chris, Lauren, Clare, David, Elizabeth Jean, Janelle, Sara, Marianna as well as great-grandchildren Nick, Rileigh, Chloe, Sage and Grace.
Through her joyous spirit, kindness, prayerful life and love for those close to her, Jean impacted and shaped the lives of all whom she touched.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek with a rosary beginning at 7:00 P.M. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 12:30 P.M. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, with a reception afterwards in the fellowship hall. Interment will follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
