

Johnelle was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Cortner, her parents, and her sister Marceane Morrow Houlihan.
She is survived by her brother John DeWitt Morrow Junior, her three children Mark Edmond Cortner and wife Julia and ex-wife Betty, Marcia Cortner Long and husband Jim, and David Anthony Cortner. By grandchildren Shannon Cortner, Lindsay Cortner, Michael Long, Jessica Long Burgos, and great grandchildren Alexa Long, Kailer Long, and Sunny Burgos and numerous nieces and nephews.
Johnelle was a fifth generation native Houstonian, she graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1943, and from Rice Institute with a BA degree in 1946. While at Rice, she was a member of the Women’s council for four years, a member of the student council and Owen Wister Literary Society. Due to her own hearing loss, Johnelle generously volunteered her time to advocate for the deaf and hearing impaired. A member of S.H.H.H., a member of the governing board of the Texas School for the Deaf 1992-1997, she was a member of Sharpstown Country Club Estates Garden Club and Sharpstown Country Club Estates Civic Association where she held board positions for over twenty years.
The family will receive visitors at Settegast-Kopf (15015 Southwest Fwy) from 5-8pm on 6/5/2024. The funeral will be held at Settegast-Kopf on 6/6/2024 at 11am followed by a graveside service at Forest Park Westheimer at 1pm.
