Kathleen Francies Schrang was born on January 13, 1951, in New York City, New York. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Kathy grew up on Long Island before attending university at the Church College of Hawaii (now Brigham Young University–Hawaii) in Laie, Hawaii. She married Evan Richardson in 1971 and raised two children, Mark Richardson and Sarah Hale.
After living for several years in Miami, Florida, Kathy spent her adult life living in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, London, England, and Maracaibo, Venezuela. She moved to Sugar Land, Texas in 2001.
Kathy was an avid reader and enjoyed cycling, hiking, and traveling. Despite fighting cancer, Kathy went on to climb glaciers in Alaska, explore rainforests in Colombia, hike in the wild Tien Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, and go on multiple safaris with her family in Africa.
