Kay was born in Mineral Wells, Texas on September 22, 1942 to loving parents, Ruth and Denzil Baker. As the daughter of a military officer she had the opportunity to live all over the world, such as Hawaii and Japan, but always considered herself a true Texan. She graduated from Falls Church High School in Virginia, where she met the love of her life Richard Haines, with whom she recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary. She attended Radford Women’s College in Virginia and Morehead State University in Kentucky. After attending college, she worked for the U.S. Dept. of Defense at the Pentagon and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Louisville, Kentucky. Her husband’s military assignment took them to Germany for three years where their first daughter, Keri, was born. After completing his military commitment, they returned to Texas where she lived out her lifelong dream of being a wife and mother. During these years, she was blessed with two more children, Kristi and Richard Jr.
Kay lived life to its fullest and was young at heart. She loved being involved with her Bible study class, Special Forces, at Second Baptist Church. She was also a member of The HBU Guild, Sugar Creek Women’s Association and Garden Club, Merry Ministries Woman’s Bible Study, Organic Vegetable Co-op, “Shower Queens” lunches and her special monthly bridge group, which she was a part of for over 30 years. She enjoyed spending time outside whether it was long walks with her loyal, white, standard poodle, Solomon, or adventures such as hiking in Peru, walking the paths that Jesus walked in Israel, watching wildlife in Africa, hot air ballooning in Albuquerque, riding a camel in Egypt and many vacations by the beach. She never liked to be left out of having fun!
Kay's most cherished times were those spent with her family. She would drop everything at a moments notice to be with her husband, children and grandchildren whenever they needed her. She was the matriarch of her family and will be tremendously missed.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Denzil Baker; and her niece, Lori Ann Baker. She is survived by those who loved her including her devoted husband, Richard; her daughters Keri Earls and her husband Kelly, and Kristi Herman and her husband Hugh; and son, Richard Haines, Jr. “Kay-Kay” adored her three grandsons, Kaleb, Kolson and Kamden Earls. She is also survived by her brother, Derrel Baker; and her sister-in-law, Faye.
A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 2p.m. in the Sanctuary of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the nearby Deacon’s Parlor.
Prior to Wednesday’s service, the family will have gathered for a private interment in Bryan, Texas where Kay's parents and niece have also been laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Second Baptist Church 6400 Woodway Drive Houston, TX 77057 www.second.org; Prestonwood Christian Academy 6801 West Park Blvd. Plano, TX 75094 www.prestonwoodchristian.org; or Poodle Rescue of Houston 13302 Schroeder Road Houston, TX 77070 www.poodlerescueofhouston.org.
