Dr. L E Richey

Born at home on November 23, 1928 in Port Neches, TX, L.E. was the only son of Luther and Bertie Richey. He kept special memories of growing up in The Big Thicket in East Texas surrounded by his extensive family of aunts, uncles, cousins. He put himself through Baylor University, then the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston TX, 1954 class. He practiced Family Medicine for 2 years before returning to school first as a General Surgery resident, then transferring to Radiology.

Dr. Richey served proudly in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon rising to the rank of Captain. He spoke fondly of how this East Texas boy traveled all over the world, serving his country. He then continued in the Air Force Reserves for many years.

Dr. Richey (called Doc by his friends and family) loved being a doctor. He established radiology offices around Texas in his early years, flying his plane to various locations as he built his practice. He subsequently settled in Richmond TX, developing the radiology department over 20 years at Polly Ryon Hospital when medical imaging was in its infancy. He oversaw the transformation from Xray to CT, MRI, ultrasound among other modalities. He then opened private outpatient imaging centers, (US Imaging) in Sugar Land, Houston, Beaumont, Pearland and San Antonio. Ever the maverick, he sold his imaging centers, then bought them back again a few years later for the purpose of providing a legacy for his children. He was very proud to teach and pass onto them the family medical business. He also cherished his many relationships with his colleagues and employees who reciprocated his love and respect.

Dr. Richey was a highly respected medical businessman and leader, transforming and strengthening the Fort Bend Medical Society to its current form as a vibrant resource for physicians in Fort Bend County.

Outside of medicine, L.E. was an avid outdoorsman – hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, camping, tennis, golf, – some of these all over the world. He passed on his passion and love of nature to his family who he included in many of his adventures.

Dr. Richey was a Christian with a strong faith in God and dedication of service resulting in the founding of Carolina Creek Christian Camp in Riverside TX, together with his wife Shelley and supported by many philanthropists in Houston. Meeting and working with a multitude of devoted friends and staff within the Christian camping world was a privileged experience he held dear to his heart.

LE is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Shelley. Together they traveled the world, creating many memories and friendships. They never stopped laughing, talking and debating ideas as lifelong learners, with service to God always at the center.

He is also survived by his cherished children Randy Richey, Thomas (Jodi) Richey, Todd (Lisa) Richey, Lisa Jacobs, Tara Hall, Lance (Lynne) Richey, Kyle (Anna) Richey. 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren were all special blessings as well as step daughter Chelsea (Jason) Purifoy and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Bertie Richey, sister Marge Poteet, Dawn Richey and Sally Richey, respected mothers of his children.

Doc requested that his friends and family gather for a casual family visitation, reminiscing with love and laughter. This will be held on Wednesday, August 19 from 12 pm to 2 pm at Settegast-Kopf Co. at Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land TX 77478. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Carolina Creek a Cho-Yeh Camp, or your favorite charity are requested.
