Angus Malcolm McKay of Sugar Land, known to his family and friends as “Malcolm” passed away on February 1, 2025. A true gentleman with a heart for others, we rejoice knowing he is walking with Jesus.
Malcolm was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 26,1938 to Angus and Alva McKay. Younger brother to Kay, he was so thankful for the incredibly loving home he grew up in.
In the summer of 1956, Malcolm met the love of his life, Carolyn Jean Koch, at Mo Ranch. However, it wasn’t until a few years later when he spotted her again at Orientation at Del Mar Jr. College that their life-long love story began. Married in 1959, Malcolm and Carolyn spent the next 65 years selflessly loving one another and their family. He never stopped “dating” her. Compliments, praise and thankfulness seasoned every mention of her name. He cherished her with all of his heart and served her tirelessly up until his final days.
Malcolm graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1957. His college years took him to Del Mar Junior College, Tulsa University and Lamar University where he played football. Upon graduating he began a 40 year career with Luby’s Cafeteria, which took him to Corpus Christi, El Paso, Victoria and finally Houston, where Malcolm and Carolyn planted permanent roots. It was the perfect career for the ultimate “people person”. He adored his employees and patrons and lived by the adage “The customer is always right.” Whether joining friends at their table, sending pecan pies home with families or letting police officers eat free, he was always looking to brighten someone’s day. As recently as two weeks ago he was still reconnecting with former Luby’s employees from all over the country, young and old. Thank you, Facebook Messenger.
Malcolm’s passions were his faith, his family and his friends. Long time members at Second Baptist Church, he was so thankful for the friends, the fellowship and the teachings he received from Dr. Young and his Sunday School teachers. Although he was not able to drive to church these last few years, his Sunday mornings were spent religiously watching the televised sermons of Dr. Young, Charles Stanley and Creflo Dollar. His favorite verse being Matthew 6:6, we feel so blessed to have a dad who loved the Lord and who prayed continually to Him.
Malcolm’s love for his family was unmatched. He never missed an opportunity to lavish praise and love upon his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Intentional, tender, grace-filled and fun…wherever he was, you wanted to be! His love and affection knew no bounds. Whether you were 3 or 93, if you were in front of him you were the most important person in the world to him. His “days off” were “days on” when it came to family. Whether it was coaching football and softball, hunting, fishing, golfing, skiing the blacks, building a garden, swimming, playing tennis, sharing his love of music, taking his girls shopping, getting to know and adore his kids’ friends, or playing practical jokes on the family, he did not waste a minute in creating a home filled with love and joy!
Malcolm loved his friends and his neighbors fiercely. And there were so many! His Scotsmoor Court family, his deer lease buddies, golfing friends, life-long Luby’s friends, Sunday School friends, High School friends.…he never stopped reaching out, pouring in, connecting with those he loved and sharing the stories. The stories that never got old! Loyal to the core…a friend for a day was a friend for life for him. He chose to only see the very best in every single person. He knew no other way!
We thank the Lord for the very day He thought of Angus Malcolm McKay. And we rejoice and smile, because the man who loved all of us so selflessly and so well is basking and standing in the everlasting love of his Savior and God! Forever!
Malcolm is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carolyn; daughter, Danna and Tim Burkett of Houston, son, Brad and Tiffany McKay of New Canaan, Connecticut and daughter, Meredith and Carter Crow of Houston. He was affectionately known as “Dado” and “Audo” to his eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Parker and Mary Burkett and their daughter Kellis; Preston and May Burkett and their three kids, Hallie, Whit and Kate; Bradley, Kinley, and William McKay; Walker, Charlotte and Thomas Crow. He is also survived by his adoring sister, Kay McKay Myers of San Antonio and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Bobby Myers and his sister-in-law Elizabeth McGuff.
