Mildred was born in Paducah, Texas, on March 29, 1932, to Jamie and Inez Cate. As a child, she started school at age 5 and rode the bus 15 miles into town from their home in the country. She graduated from Paducah High School in 1948 at age 16 and began college at Texas Tech University as a journalism major. In the summer of 1950, after her sophomore year of college, Mildred met Glenn V. Jones in Paducah, when he was in town to play semi-pro baseball. The two were married on September 22 of the same year, in Lubbock, Texas, beginning a marriage and partnership that would span more than 64 years, until Glenn’s passing in 2015.
Mildred and Glenn raised three children. Mildred worked as a homemaker, cooking and sewing while supporting her family. She also worked as a library aide during her children’s younger years, until she completed her college education at Texas Woman’s University in 1977 and began working full-time as a librarian. From Paducah to Abilene to Lubbock to Arlington to Sugar Land, Mildred was a devoted member of the Church of Christ and served faithfully in each local church along the way.
Mildred loved traveling and reading. She read on her Kindle and took part in multiple book clubs right up until the end of her life. She also enjoyed watching all sports, but none rivaled the Texas Tech Red Raiders or the Texas Rangers.
Mildred was preceded in death by an infant son, Rodney Wayne; her parents, Jamie and Inez Cate; a granddaughter, Cheryl Denice Halbert; her husband, Glenn V. Jones; and her son, Glenn David Jones.
She is survived by her two daughters, a joyful and ever-growing crowd of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her beloved dog, Pumpkin.
