Monica was born on May 7, 1959, in San Francisco de Córdoba, Argentina to Domingo Juan Ferrero and Marta Rosa Rapari. She grew up with three sisters: Mirta, Ana Maria, and Patricia. She was raised in a home that emphasized kindness, learning, hard work, and family, which ultimately shaped her character, values, and pursuits throughout her life.
Monica was a brilliant woman, deeply committed to lifelong learning and excellence throughout her career. She attended the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN) in Rosario, Argentina. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Mario Heredia. She then went on to complete her PhD in Chemical Engineering at UTN in Santa Fe, Argentina. She immigrated to the United States with her husband and toddler Natalia in 1990 for a postdoctoral fellowship in Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The family later moved to a small town outside of Albany, New York, where Monica worked for GE Corporate Research. Her work there culminated in several patents for a new foam insulation product intended to improve refrigeration efficiency. Her career later brought the family to Texas, where she joined Shell and dedicated more than 25 years to the company, primarily at the Technology Center. She led research and technology development programs and helped advance projects related to reducing fossil fuel usage in industrial environments. Over the course of her career, she authored many papers in international journals. Monica recently retired in 2025.
While her career was very important to her, Monica was committed to a balanced life, and her family was always her highest priority. Monica treasured the life she built with her husband, Mario. Together, they shared a love of travel, sports, and adventure. They raised a loving family that includes three children she was very proud of: Natalia, Marco, and Vanessa. She was also proud of her children’s spouses and partners: Robert Schneider, Elizabeth Gerzina and Arianna Thompson. Watching them grow, succeed, and support one another filled her with immense joy and gratitude. Monica was also delighted to become a grandmother with the birth of her grandson, Lucas Enzo Schneider, on March 1, 2026, to Natalia and Robert.
No matter how busy life became, Monica always made it a priority for the family to travel together. She believed that exploring new places and sharing new experiences as a family created some of life's most meaningful memories. Whether it was a weekend road trip or a visit to a new country, she made these adventures an integral part of family life. She also cherished her extended family, and the family made many trips to Argentina and Spain to visit them. This past fall, after celebrating the wedding of her son Marco to Elizabeth, she led her extended family on a trip up the east coast, from Charlotte to Washington DC and New York City. Moreover, during one of several trips to Europe, she reconnected with her ancestral relatives in northern Italy, and she was intentional about maintaining those relationships. No matter where life took her, she remained deeply connected to her roots, preserving lifelong friendships from her childhood and the many places she called home throughout the years. She valued those relationships and had a remarkable gift for staying in touch, making friends and family feel remembered and appreciated.
Monica was dedicated to leading a healthy and active lifestyle. She was an avid tennis player, participating in numerous tennis leagues and events. In more recent years, she was a dedicated workout partner to her two daughters, enjoyed riding her bike with her husband, Mario, and found joy in taking the family dog, Lola, for walks.
Monica also had an unwavering commitment to environmental friendliness. She never let a to-go container be used only once and always found a creative use for items most people would throw away without a second thought.
Monica will forever be remembered as kind, considerate, and always fair.
She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and former colleagues.
Services will be held at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land on June 29, 2026, with a funeral mass from 10-11am and a reception to follow from 11am-1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society in Monica’s honor. The family would love to hear about any donations made.
