Peter Sauermilch was born on November 6, 1946 in Houston to Dora and Ewald Robert (E.R.) Sauermilch Jr. After a long battle with cancer, Peter died on November 9, 2019 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years and best friend, Sally, his daughter, Willow, and his son, Matthew. As an only child, Peter grew up in Bellaire, Texas. Peter spent his youth tinkering with electronics, causing minor mischief with neighborhood friends, traveling with his parents, and summering with extended family in Yorktown, Texas. Peter graduated from Texas Tech University in 1971 where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics. Peter enjoyed spelunking, skiing, and made many dear and deep friendships that have survived the decades since. At Tech, Peter met the love of his life, Sally, whom he married in 1972. After college, Peter served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory in Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Following his service, he and Sally relocated to the Houston area, where they remained until his death.
Peter spent his career working for a number of companies in the petroleum industry, where his work led to the development and acquisition of several patents. Peter was an avid amateur radio operator (KD5QPX), earning his first radio license in high school. It was through ham radio that Peter was a member of the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club, volunteered with the Fort Bend County Emergency Management Radio Operators Group (EMROG), and for nearly a decade provided emergency support for MS150 Houston to Austin bicycle ride. He was always willing to go out of his way for others and made many treasured friendships along the way. Peter actively participated in the lives of those he loved. He loved them unconditionally, showed his children how to be independent thinkers and doers, and up until the very end, always found an opportunity to interject his humor.
