Petronilo "Peter" Panaligan was born on September 7, 1959 to Antonio Panaligan Sr. and Estrella Calatay in Quezon City, Philippines. He was the 5th child from a family of 8 children. Peter studied and graduated Valedictorian of his High School class of San Sebastian College, Manila, Philippines. On his second year of college of engineering, he came to the United States. Peter then worked for the City of Los Angeles and eventually retired after 33 years of service. Peter has also been married to his wife, Maria, for 33 years. Peter loves and is proud of his 2 children Richter and Chris. He defends his faith, especially the Blessed Mother Mary, who was with him during all of his trials. Peter used his God-given talent in service of the Church. He has been playing the guitar for liturgical services since high school, then continued at St. Jane Frances De Chantal, North Hollywood, CA and St. Angela Merici, Missouri City, TX. He was an avid fan of the LA Lakers, the LA Dodgers, and San Francisco 49ers. He was also a Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel buff. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a love for music, and loved his family and friends unconditionally.

Dear Peter,
It hasn't sunk in yet that you had passed. I was connected to you through your love of music more than anything else. I will always treasure that rare & very special connection. It was both natural & spiritual for me. You were such a happy soul when you were playing the guitar for the Saturday & Sunday masses in (English & Spanish) @ St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church in NH, CA where you volunteered for the music ministry for over 24 yrs; you invited me to join you. Thanks for that blessing. Your joys in life were: to love your family more than anyone else, to share your talent in music, to be simple, to be a kind human being, to be thankful, to say sorry when you made a mistake (unintentionally), to love others without question, & to offer everything to God & to give Him the glory that truly belongs to Him. You were my living saint. Thank you for being my blessing. I hope that I loved you enough. Enjoy eternal life with God, the Father, Mother Mary, the saints & angels & papa in heaven. Sincerely, your sister, Doris

This is what I wrote alone in my grief, and would have said if given the chance to say a few words on behalf of the Panaligan family:
To the immediate family of Peter Panaligan, his wife Mate, his two sons, Richter & Chris, please accept my condolences to you and to Peter’s mother Estrella, 4 brothers & 4 sisters, aunts & uncles and all the extended families & relatives, cousins & friends as well from all over the world. I have a few words to say, all good things about you. You are our inspiration.
His hobbies are playing basketball, he’s a very good shooter, he never misses a free throw. He likes watching movies, martial arts movies, Bruce Lee movies & we would talk to each other like we were acting it out. “Enter The Dragon ” is one of his favorites. He would say “Kick me, kick me. How did it feel to you?” Then I would say “let me think” then his turn “Don’t think, FEEL. IT IS LIKE A FINGER POINTING AWAY TO THE MOON. DON’T CONCENTRATE ON THE FINGER OR YOU’LL MISS ALL THAT HEAVENLY GLORY.
I remember the days when we would go to the arcade by Vermont LACC in our younger days. He likes going to the arcade to play Ms. Pac-Man. He loves playing the guitar, acoustic guitar with nylon strings. And he plays the keyboard & other instruments too. He taught me how to play the guitar, but I suck at it. He shared his talents with the choir at San Sebastián College, St Jane Frances de Chantal & St Angela Merici.
He had a beautiful, cool voice. He likes listening to jazz. Earl Klugh is one of his favorites & Luther Vandross’ song “Never Too Much”. He had a creative sense of humor where he would change the lyrics to a song to make it funny, like replacing “Never Too Much” with “Nabatukan”. A joke I remember he played on us was to say the phrase “abayga-gupala-akueh”. Saying it slowly at first and repeating faster over & over again until you realize what you are actually saying. Thank you JESUS for remembering Peter when You come into Your Kingdom. Amen.

Rest In Peace, brother Peter.
Manoy "Liloy" as we were growing up was his nickname.
The photograph I shared here was probably taken in the early 1980's. I came back from a permanent change of station based outside continental United States, I had to spend lull time in Los Angeles to continue my trip to my next assigned PCS base located in Arizona, which is another six to eight hours drive time from where they were at.
I will never forget what you had shared and taught us directly or indirectly.
Please find a way to forgive my brotherly bad attitude sometimes.
Send me a message to Pa, WE LOVE YOU!!!
God Bless all of us.

Pette was one of the 78 select third yr HS students from different schools chosen into the highly coveted Ateneo Jr Summer Sem Scholars (AJSS). We were batch 8, brought together in the summer of 1975. We enjoyed that summer and we all became friends. Recently, Pette reconnected with us through our viber group. As always, he was funny , inspiring and spritual. We will miss him. His friendship was priceless.

When I think about Kuya Pett, I remember how much he loved his family, adored God through his active involvement in the church through service and music and of course his infectious wonderfully mischievous sense of humor out of nowhere.

In my early days out here in the States of year 2002, through Boss Archie’s arrangement, I had a privileged to meet and live at their North Hollywood abode. Kuya Pett, Ate Mate and the rest of Panaligan clan opened their home to me, a total stranger but had embraced and took me in as their own without hesitation. More than a simple act of taking risk to a stranger, Kuya Pett’s generous soul will always remain in my heart. Thank you Kuya Pett, I'll never forget your kindness. Thanking God for the time, the care and the light you were able to share. Thinking of your family too and praying for God's comfort.

My beloved uncle, you taught me to be like Bruce Lee whom you idolized. It always reminds me of you whenever I hear Earl Klugh and the music of Hiroshima. I am also proud to be your wingman in the good old days. You're always there when I needed you the most. You always made me laugh especially when I was down. I love you dearly my uncle Pete. I surely will miss you.
