Dr. Ramon Garrido, a compassionate, devoted, faithful, and kind-hearted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and physician, was born May 1, 1930, in Guantanamo, Cuba. He passed away on February 20, 2026, at the age of 95. All Glory To God!
Dr. Garrido graduated from the University of Havana Medical School in 1954 and dedicated his life to the practice of medicine, serving others with steady care and deep commitment. He married the love of his life, the beautiful and gracious Doralice Rodriguez in Guantanamo, Cuba on June 11, 1960. Fidel Castro was already in Cuba which was communist and continues to be to this day. They forcibly took possession of the first private clinic/hospital in Guantanamo built by Ramon and 5 of his closest physician friends. Ramon also lost several of his friends and relatives to the reality of life under communism: a governance method using extreme repression and fear to stay in power. He and his wife and mother fled Cuba after several attempts in 1964 and followed their friends to Warren, Ohio where Ramon redid his pediatrics training at Trumbull Memorial Hospital until they moved from the unfamiliar cold of the Midwest to the welcoming warmth of Houston, Texas where he joined the newly formed apprenticeship program at Baylor College of Medicine in the practice of allergy. A classmate of his, Dr Waldo Martinez, offered him a job as a pediatrician in his group, asking him to specialize in pediatric allergy and immunology. It was during this apprenticeship that he was approached by The Houston Allergy (and Asthma) Clinic and was eventually hired as the sole pediatric allergy specialist of their practice. He remained there, eventually assuming its directorship, until he retired at age 78. He, along with Doralice spent time traveling the world and creating lasting memories with each other, their children, grandchildren, and great grandson throughout their lives. He continued to counsel his family until the day he died, imparting wisdom and experiences which they all will treasure for years and generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Consuelo Mayor de Garrido and Ramon Garrido; his sister, Margarita Garrido de Chimeno (Diego Luis Chimeno); his brothers, Luis Garrido and Jose Garrido (Mary Pujol de Garrido still alive); and his son, Ramon Garrido, who died at birth.
Ramon is survived by his spouse, Doralice Rodriguez de Garrido, to whom he was married for 65 years; his daughter, Doris Garrido, M.D. and her husband Victor O. Mendiola, MD; his son, Charles Garrido and his wife Alejandra Correa de Garrido; his grandchildren, Victor R. Mendiola, MD (Kristen Ott, M.D.), Sara A. Mendiola, Amy T. Mendiola, Cecilia C Mendiola, and Anamaria Garrido; and his great-grandchild, Victor Antonio Mendiola, a tribute to his grand legacy.
Ramon found joy in fishing, traveling, calisthenics, playing dominoes, making puns, rooting for the Astros, and most of all, being with family and friends. His love extended beyond his immediate family to include his employees and fellow doctors, patients, and children, who he dedicated his life through his work.
A faithful presence in his community and profession, Ramon was affiliated with St Laurence Catholic Church, the Texas Medical Association, the Harris County Medical Society, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and the Hispanic/Latin American Medical Association.
