Robert George Sims unexpectedly passed away in his sleep Thursday, October 18, 2018, at his home in Richmond, Texas. He was born on September 30, 1942, in Queens, NY, and was later adopted by his loving parents, Walden and Martha Sims, of Wolcott, NY. After his graduation from high school, he attended Alfred University. Bob then served in the Air Force and trained as a Russian linguist at Syracuse University. He met his wife Betsy during a visit home to Wolcott, where she was the new French teacher. Bob and Betsy just celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on October 16. After their wedding, the couple lived for a year and a half in Turkey while Bob was stationed there. They then spent a year in Maryland where he was stationed at Ft. Meade. Upon Bob's discharge from the Air Force in 1968, they moved to Ithaca, NY, where Bob attended Cornell University. He began his police career at Cayuga Heights Police Department, and transferred to Cornell University Police where he worked until 1997. While a police officer, he received a degree in Criminal Justice at a nearby community college and continued taking classes at Cornell. After leaving Cornell Police, he drove bus on the Cornell campus and later worked part time at the ShurSave grocery store in Trumansburg, NY, where he loved interacting with the customers. In 2014 he and Betsy relocated to Texas to spend time with their young grandson. He soon made many friends there and enjoyed the times with his family nearby. In his spare time, Bob loved playing softball, golf, walking and watching Dodger baseball games. He always had a fondness for pets, especially the couple's various German Shepherds. He also took pleasure in reading, and collecting things such as police patches and golf balls. He was a member of the DelWebb Men's Club and Golf Club and enjoyed trips with the Travel Club. He especially loved sitting with the garage door open and visiting with friends and neighbors as they walked by. Bob is survived by his wife Betsy, daughters Christie of Ithaca and Jennifer (son-in-law Mustafa Ozturk and grandson Ozan) of Sugar Land TX. His sister Kathy (Joe) Ginett of PA, brothers-in-law Christopher (Bobby) Kinsey of CA, Merritt (Lois) Kinsey of CO, Rodger Wilcox of NC and multiple nieces and nephews also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, Walden and Martha Sims, his mother and father-in-law Kenneth and Doris Kinsey, sister-in-law Kathy Wilcox and brother-in-law Francis Kinsey. The family has been greatly comforted by the outpouring of support during this difficult time.
