
He graduated from Lamar High School in 1943, and then entered the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in the Occupation of Japan from Sept. 23, 1945 – July 27, 1946. After being Honorably Discharged on August 25, 1946, Roy graduated from The University of Houston in 1949 with a Business Degree and then received a Law Degree from South Texas College of Law in 1955.
Roy was employed by Superior Oil Co., Ohio Oil Co., and Atlantic Refining Co. In 1962, he opened his law practice. He was Vice-President of Houston Equity Investment Corp., and retired in 1987 after the corporation was sold.
In 1975, Roy and his wife, Eleanor, became members of Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
Roy was also a member of the Texas Bar Association-1955, the American Bar Association-1956, U.S. District Court-1957, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps League, where he served as Judge Advocate, a member of the American Legion, the U.S. Chess Federation, the Houston Chess Club, serving as Director of Seniors, and was an Associate member of the Texas Dept. of Public Safety-Officers Association.
Roy’s sport was tennis and his literary interest was in poetry. He gave poetry recitals at various times and there was a CD made of his favorite fifty poems which he had put to memory. His hobby was chess, and he was co-author of two chess books, “In Search of Zugzwang”- 2001, and “Openings by Computer”- 2012.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Eleanor; sons, Frank and Michael; daughter, Elizabeth; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Rebecca Scott and her husband Vincent. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dixie; and one grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 8, 2013, in the Chapel at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, 13333 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77478.
Interment will be held at 12:30 PM, Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038, with full military honors.
