Following his graduation from Bellaire High School in 1969, Steve joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam War where he served 4 years on the USS Destroyer Samuel Gompers.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Steve used his GI Bill to attend The University of Houston, pledging Sigma Chi Fraternity. Treating school like a job, he worked very hard to graduate, with honors, in 3 ½ years with a degree in accounting.
He began his career at the accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. but after a year realized that this was not what he wanted to do, so he went to work for The Berkley Corporation becoming a custom home builder in Champion Forest. Here is where Steve found his passion for construction. After several years at Berkley, he realized he wanted to expand his knowledge and went to work for HA Lott. It was there that Steve excelled at project managing notable buildings throughout Houston such as Inn on the Park, Second Baptist Church at Woodway, and The Phoenix Tower. Being the visionary that Steve was, he quickly recognized the need for commercial developments in First Colony and joined the Sugar Land Properties team. For the next 20 years, Steve put every piece of himself into ensuring his projects were completed with integrity, honesty, and precision. All who knew Steve know he would never quit until the job was completed correctly, on time and within budget.
Steve was a dependable, fun, thoughtful and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He always wanted to do the right thing and was driven throughout his whole life to provide the best for his family.
Steve was passionate about fishing, the Houston Astros and traveling with his wife Dona to their favorite places like Monterey, California, Maui, Chicago and the Indy 500. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing with his buddies in Alaska, the Bahamas and Rockport.
He is survived by his wife, Dona Mercadal; his children, Brad Mercadal of Houston, Texas, Kelly Leeker and husband, David and beautiful granddaughter, Mallory of Katy, Texas; his mother, Patricia Mercadal of Houston, Texas and his siblings, Linda Upchurch of Brenham, Texas and Jay Mercadal of Austin, Texas.
The memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 4, 2016 in The Morrow Chapel at The Settegast-Kopf Company Funeral Directors in Sugar Creek in Sugar Land, Texas..
