Ting was born on April 17, 1941 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to Wu Shih-Chuan and Huang Shun. Although he was raised in humble circumstances, Ting demonstrated unusual academic aptitude at a very young age. This giftedness enabled him to pursue unique opportunities through education. He was the only member of his family to attend and graduate from high school. He went on to graduate from college, then moved to the United States when he was offered a full scholarship to a graduate program at the University of Houston, where he earned a PhD in chemical engineering. His life was marked by grit, discipline, and quiet determination.
Ting approached his 3-½-decade-long engineering career with fastidiousness and excellence. He found great satisfaction in solving complex technical problems, and he was recognized for his ability to do so. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he will be remembered most for his generosity, his kindness, his gentle temperament, his eagerness to help others, and his ability to appreciate and find joy in the simple things. In 2011, he retired from engineering in order to enjoy traveling the world with his wife, Christina, and to help support the busy piano studio that she operated out of their home.
Ting was a follower of Jesus who found comfort and guidance in Scripture. Psalm 23 held special meaning for him, as did the hymn “As the Deer,” reflecting his enduring longing for both the Lord and a better world.
His life was a testimony of humility, long-suffering, perseverance, and servanthood. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Christina Suling Wu; his children, Judy Dominick and David Wu; his son-in-law, Peter Dominick; his daughter-in-law, Cindy Wu; and his grandchildren, Charis, Alicia, Josiah, and Christina.
A Celebration of Life service honoring Ting will be held on April 17, 2026—his birthday—at 10:00 a.m. at Settegast-Kopf Funeral Home in Sugar Land, Texas, officiated by his son, Rev. David Wu.
