Dr. William James Williams, a beloved husband, father, scholar, and public servant, passed away on June 14, 2026, at MD Anderson Houston, Texas, following organ failure. He was 96 years old. Born on December 25, 1929, in Jefferson City, Kentucky, Dr. Williams lived a life of extraordinary purpose, intellectual achievement, and deep compassion for others.
Dr. Williams pursued higher education with characteristic determination, earning a Master of Public Administration from New York University and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California. His academic career was distinguished by his pioneering work in developing and expanding the field of Epistemics, a contribution that left a lasting imprint on scholarly discourse. He rose to the rank of Emeritus Professor at USC, where he remained actively engaged in university life and served on multiple committees. Throughout his career, he also served as a consultant, lecturer, and visiting professor at numerous colleges and universities across the country, sharing his vast knowledge with generations of students and fellow academics. His scholarly reputation earned him recognition in both Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
Beyond the academics, Dr. Williams dedicated himself to public service with the same vigor and brilliance he brought to his scholarship. He served with the United States Department of State and held the position of Deputy Staff Director of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He served as
Congressional Field Director for United States Congressman Augustus F. Hawkins and lent his expertise as a consultant to the Library of Congress, the Port Authority of New York, and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. His commitment to justice and equity was further reflected in his involvement in the Civil Rights movement. He also ran for Secretary of State of
California, demonstrating his fearless willingness to step into the public arena on behalf of the causes he held dear. Additionally, he served as a moderator for educational programs on both ABC and CBS, bringing important conversations to a national audience.
Those who knew Dr. Williams remember a man of boundless curiosity, energy and genuine warmth. He was inquisitive by nature, always eager to engage others in conversation, yet he possessed the rare gift of truly listening. His intellect was formidable, spanning far beyond his own field, yet he never wore his brilliance on his sleeve. Instead, he made others feel valued and heard. He was fearless in engaging people from all walks of life, and at the same time remarkably kind and likeable. He was passionate about USC football, cheering on the Trojans faithfully over the years. He had a tender spot for animals, particularly cats, and he went out of his way to ensure that every feline member of the family received the best of care. Above all, he was passionate about living and savored every moment he was given.
Dr. Williams is survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Leonora K. Petty; his daughter, Morgan Brown; and his daughter, Paige Harrison. Their lives, like so many others, were immeasurably enriched by his presence, his wisdom, and his love.
May he find peace in the eternal rest he so richly earned after a life lived with such fullness and purpose.
Memorial service details are to be determined. The family will share

Dr. William James Williams was, in every sense of the words, a Force of Nature.
