

A Lafayette native, Barbara had lived in Sulphur for 36 years. She was a retired certified professional secretary and was a notary public. Her last job before retiring was serving as secretary and office manager at Alpha Chemical Company in Sulphur. Up into her later years she was still active with notary work and served as an election precinct worker. Barbara was born Feb. 17, 1929 to Odile Romero and Alcee Melancon. In 1949, she married Curtis Artigue. During the course of their married life the couple lived in a number of Louisiana towns and cities including Lafayette, Bogalusa, Pineville, Alexandria, Leesville and Sulphur. Barbara was an accomplished seamstress who loved to sew. She served as a Cub Scout den mother for many years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur for 36 years. She was a Catholic Daughter, served as a Eucharistic minister and assisted in operating the church’s gift shop. She was a Pink Lady at West Calcasieu-Cameron Hospital Foundation Auxillary in Sulphur for 18 years.
Survivors include her children, J. Michael Artigue and wife Carlyn of Lafayette, and Donna Artigue Price and husband Neil of Lake Charles. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Michael Artigue, Natalie Artigue and Stevie Artigue of Lafayette and Katherine (Katie) Price of Lake Charles. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Raymond Melancon and Al Melancon and one sister, Vivian Melancon Miller.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur. Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Leonville, La. where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Curtis. Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home.
