She was a native of Eunice and had been a resident of Sulphur for over 20 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Lasalette Catholic Church in Sulphur. Barbara enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports, going to garage sales and flea markets, dancing, listening to French music, and cooking for her family. She would often say "if you want me to cook, get me the meat from Misse's groceries".
Survivors include her children, Shawn Smith Matt and husband, Craig Matt, Sr. of Sulphur, Reynaldo Nunez, Jr. and fiance' Anja Bouman of Holland, Carol Vasquez and husband, Mario, Robert Nunez, and Gilbert Nunez, all of Taft, Texas; her siblings, Wesley Joseph Fontenot, Jr. of Toledo Bend, Dianna Fontenot of Ingleside, Texas, and Dawana Trahan, Della Duplechin, and Phyllis Smith, all of Sulphur; eleven grandchildren including Michael Smith, Craig Matt, Jr, Cuoz Matt, and Tiffany Matt; and twelve great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley Joseph Fontenot, Sr. and Mary Mae Durio Fontenot.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in Our Lady of Lasalette Catholic Church. The Rev. Andrews Kollannoor, MS will officiate. Burial will be in Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday with a Rosary service at 6 p.m., and from 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
