CJ was born in Merryville on November 1, 1942. He was the youngest of eleven children born to Ernest Lawrence Lowery, Sr. and his wife, Agnes Ellender Lowery. CJ attended schools in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas, completing his education at Hackberry High School. He also attended McNeese State University.
CJ married the former Donna Lynn Elender in June of 1961 at the Henning Memorial United Methodist Church. CJ went to work for Davison Chemical Company, a division of W.R. Grace in Carlyss. CJ worked there for thirty-eight years. He was active in the company credit union and ended his career as manager in the lab there. CJ was a member of the first Jaycee group in Sulphur, and the Carlyss Lions Club. He coached in the Bronco Baseball League and coached for the Dixie Youth Vets alongside Rodney Guilbeaux.
CJ will be remembered as an avid sportsman and a devoted father. He was a dedicated duck hunter, fisherman, and deer hunter. He gave all to these sports, but was also a great storyteller and loved to visit with family and friends. In later life, he enjoyed traveling, especially if he could combine it with hunting and fishing trips. He also loved to design and build things, probably because his family was a pioneer lumbering family in Southwest Louisiana. The family card tournaments lasted for many long hours as they tried to defeat CJ and his partner. He was not a good loser.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Donna Lynn Elender Lowery of Carlyss; two sons, Richard Lowery and John Lowery; two brothers, Lauris Earl Lowery and wife, Janice of Sulphur, and Lawrence Lowery and wife, Sue of Lake Charles; one sister, Geraldine Cirello of Newport Beach, California; two grandchildren, Dusty Lynn Lowery and Rusty Glenn Lowery; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at noon Monday, December 19, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Following the service, a gathering will be held at the family home. CJ has made a donation to the Harvard Brain Trust in order to further the study of neurological and psychiatric disorders. His remains will later be laid to rest at Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Carlyss. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the charity closest to your heart. The family would like to thank Christus St. Patrick Hospital, Oceans, and The Guardian House for their excellent care of CJ.
