Curtis "C.J." Joseph Hernandez, 83, of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born to his late parents, Ovey and Esaure Hernandez on March 30, 1942 in Scott, Louisiana. C.J. graduated from Sulphur High School in 1960. He enjoyed golfing and various sports, dancing to his French music, and was a race horse trainer with his father in his early years. C.J. was in the Army Reserve and also a member of the Sulphur Jaycee's. He coached youth sports for a number of years and was the Gymnastics Etc. Booster Club President. After retiring as a pipefitter from Cities Service (now Citgo), he was proud owner of C.J.'s Bourbon Shop for many years, where he enjoyed dancing to the jukebox with French music. He made many lifelong friends and loved the camaraderie. C.J. was Vice President and President of the McNeese Cowboy Club. He was also the equipment manager for McNeese Football for four years. C.J. and Sherrill cooked for the Cowboy Club, Coaches, and Players. There were always To-go plates available. C.J. was always very involved with his grandchildren's various events, and was a true family man. His Catholic faith was very important to him as he made his Cursillo when he was young. He was a parishioner at St. Theodore Catholic Church for many years. C.J. never met a stranger and was a part of many Mardi Gras Krewes.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrill Hernandez; children, Lance Hernandez (Lisa) of Vinton, Jill Dearman (Joe) of Lake Charles, Hope Benoit (Rodney) of Sulphur, J.T. Fontenot (Dr. Ashley Greenman) of Moss Bluff, and Rikki Monticello of Moss Bluff; fifteen grandchildren, Seth Barrilleaux (Anna Beth), Gavin Barrilleaux, Haden Hernandez (Marie), Hollis Hernandez, Kennedi Maes (Logan), Haleigh Gilbert, Beau Gilbert, Gray Gilbert, Luke Benoit, Libby Benoit, Reed Fontenot, Logan Fontenot, Elliott Fontenot, A.J. Monticello, and Sadie Monticello; six great grandchildren, Marion, Vince, Mel, Maelynn, Quincy, and Joelle; with one on the way.
Curtis is preceded in death by his parents; and his two brothers, L.J. Hernandez and J.B. Hernandez.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Sulphur, Louisiana on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 1:00 pm, with the Very Reverend Edward Richard, M.S., V.F. officiating. Visitation will be at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home in Sulphur, Louisiana on Thursday, beginning at 9:00 am, with a Rosary at 11:00 am, followed by a procession to Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church for a 1:00 pm Mass. Burial will be at Mimosa Pines South Cemetery in Carlyss, Louisiana.
