With faith in the promise of eternal life, Dora Marcantel Johnson, 89, of Sulphur, Louisiana peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 surrounded by those who loved her. She was born to her late parents, Luther and Leona Marcantel on May 21, 1937 in Perkins, Louisiana. She was owner/operator of Shady Oaks Kennel for over 25 years.
In her early years, she enjoyed hunting and fishing, but as a full time mom she found joy in life's simple pleasures and unexpected adventures. Dora enjoyed the excitement of slot machines, traveling to new places, such as Western States and on various Cruises. She had a special love for animals and took great pleasure in their companionship. Some of her happiest moments were peaceful mornings spent on her patio watching the cows, horses, and birds. Dora also cherished family celebrations, gathering with the people she loved, creating memories and delicious food together.
She is survived by her daughter, Dayna Johnson Peoples and husband, Randy of Austin, Texas; two brothers, R.L. Marcantel and wife Susan and Tim Marcantel and wife Sarah of Sulphur, Louisiana; grandson, Patrick Peoples; and one step-granddaughter, Haley Grant; along with her son-in-law, Todd Grant.
Dora is preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Earl Johnson; daughter, Sylvia Johnson Grant; her parents, Luther and Leona Marcantel; along with two sisters, Gladys Campbell and Dorothy Nunally.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss, Louisiana on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 10:00 am. Visitation will be at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home in Sulphur, Louisiana on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with a Rosary at 6:00 pm. Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Monday, from 8:30 am until the procession to the church. Burial will be at Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly, Louisiana.
