

Gene was a native of Dequincy and had been a resident of Sulphur for over 70 years. He was a member of Westlake Assembly of God and has always been active in the Assemblies of God serving in several capacities such as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, song leader, youth leader, and assistant Pastor. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, building furniture, singing, and playing music with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Jerlene Dowers of Sulphur; his children, David Dowers and wife, Lorie of Dequincy, Cynthia Dowers of Sulphur, Karen Chasson of Lake Charles, Randy Carpenter of Longville, Anthony Carpenter and wife, Michelle of Melbourne, Florida, and Lt. Colonel Lewis Carpenter and wife, Julia of Fort Knox, Kentucky; his siblings, Emmett Dowers of Sulphur, and Keith Dowers, Pauline Demerritt, and Brenda Racca, all of DeRidder; sixteen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by Paul and Ella Nora Dowers; and brothers, Maurice Dowers and Melvin Dowers.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 22, in Westlake Assembly of God. The Rev. Keith Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Royer Cemetery in Sulphur under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held in the church from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday all in the church.
