Glen was born on September 23, 1930 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School and was a Golden Glove boxer. After graduation, he went on to proudly attend USL (The University of Southwestern Louisiana), now ULL at Lafayette. After marrying the love of his life, they moved to Sulphur where they raised their children. He proudly served in the U.S. National Guard for 8 years.
Glen was the owner of Bonin Construction for over 50 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a Charter Member of the Maplewood-Hollywood Lions Club, holding positions as President and also a Board Member. His love of the Lions Club brought him to Louisiana Lions Club Crippled Children's Camp where he held positions as President among others and received the Golden Star Staff Member Award. He received "Lion of the Year" in 1970-1971 and in 1986-1987. Glen was instrumental in organizing the Sulphur High School Leo Club as well as the national Leo Club where he served as an advisor for 9 years. He was presented a life membership in the Maplewood Hollywood Lion's club on February 11, 1994. He was also the charter director of the Louisiana Lion's Eye Foundation in New Orleans, LA. Glen received the Philanthropist of the year award in 2012.
Glen also was one of the founding members of Care Help of Sulphur as well as the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. He was the First Father of the Year by the Toreadors in 1968 at Sulphur High School, President of Sulphur High School Band Boosters, Chairman of Moving and Building of Brimstone Museum, Chairman of West Calcasieu Bi-Centennial, Charter President of the Brimstone Historical Museum, Board Member and President of the West Calcasieu Chamber of Commerce, and member for 50 years, Board Member of the Sulphur Industrial Board for 6 years, Board Member of the Chamber Southwest from 1985-1987, Charter President of Louisiana Western Corridor, Inc. (Hwy 171), Board Member of the Calcasieu Parish Industrial Board from 1978-1980, Board Member of Summit Hospital, and Board Member of the Sabine River Authority.
He received the Citizen of the Year award in 1987 and the Volunteer of the Year award in 1999. Glen was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for over 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hill and Rena Bonin, brother, Hill Bonin, Jr., son-in-law, Tommy Jeansonne, and granddaughter, Mandy Jeansonne Poche'.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 69 years, Georgia Bonin; children, Billy J. Bonin and wife, Myra, Glenda Bonin Jeansonne, Lisa Bonin Schram and husband, Gus, and Michael R. Bonin and wife, Darlene Gautreaux Bonin; 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; sister, Nada Bonin Landry; special friend and caregiver, Tony Hogan; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home with a Rosary held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday until time of service.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau and Rev. Timothy Goodly will officiate. Burial will follow in Goos Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Bonin, Jeremy Jeansonne, Glen T. Bonin, Ray Cecil, Lee Cheatham, and Troas Poche'.
