Jean was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, was raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma, and had been a longtime resident of Sulphur. She taught piano and organ for over 30 years and was the Organist at the Maplewood United Methodist Church for over 30 years. The church awarded her the organ upon her retirement. She played piano, organ and violin. Jean was a leading participant in the Methodist Woman’s Organization. She attended the University of Oklahoma. She loved to travel extensively and had visited every state except Alaska, as well as traveling overseas.
Survivors include her son, Roy Scott Shelton; daughter, Marilyn Richmond; grandchildren, Elizabeth Shelton, Michael Shelton and Wesley Scott Shelton, all of Sulphur, Lisa McGarity Champagne of Katy, Texas, and Amy McGarity of Lake Charles; and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Leonard Allen Shelton; her son, John Allen Shelton; two sisters, Mildred Bearden and Bertha Lee Williams; and her brother, William Scott Dagg.
Her funeral will be at noon Saturday, Nov. 30, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Kathy Fitzhugh will officiate. Burial will be in Big Woods Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday in the funeral home.
