

He was a native of Hackberry and had been a resident of Sulphur for over 30 years, coming from Lawtell. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and a lifetime member of the D.A.V. John enjoyed doing anything outdoors, especially hunting and fishing at Toledo Bend, and also watching his grandchildren play. He was a member of Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patricia Atwell of Sulphur; three children, Christina Atwell of Sulphur, Michael Anderson Atwell and wife Natalie of Vinton, and Christopher Paul Atwell of Sulphur; eight grandchildren; and seven siblings, Freddie, Janice, Marie, Mark, Butch, Allen Wayne and Patsy Gail.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Johnny Atwell.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Andrews Kollannoor, MS will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until the time of the memorial service in the funeral home.
