John was born and raised in southwest Kansas before moving to Sulphur, Louisiana, where he was a resident for over 30 years. He was a member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church and an active member of the community and many civic organizations.
John was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He lived life with an enduring passion. He loved playing in the dirt with his giant tonka toys, trained rodeo queens, farmed and ranched, was a visionary entrepeneur, a self-proclaimed encyclopedia of worthless knowledge, and could expound for hours on the superhuman merits of his wife, children, and grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife, Debra Collingwood of Carlyss; three daughters, Jill Bolen and husband, Bill of Sulphur, Danielle Stevens and husband, James of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Denise Gremillion and husband, Chris of Bridge City, Texas; one son, Al Collingwood of Johnson, Kansas; three sisters, Mary Clawson of Santana, Kansas, Cynthia Saunders of Gillette, Wyoming, and Martha Barnhardt of Bucklin, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren, Alia, Ann, and Ellen Collingwood, John and Kristina Metoyer, Christine, Rebecca, and Jacob Bolen, Steven Daughenbaugh, Melissa Stevens, Kaitlyn and Hailey Gremillion, and James Collingwood. He is preceded in death by a son, Paul Collingwood; his father, Alfred John Collingwood; and his mother, Edna Lesh Collingwood.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Heather Leyland will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
