On Sunday, January 11, 2026, Joseph Carroll “Carroll Joe” Nunez 80, finally felt at peace that he mowed his lawn to perfection, had shared enough stories and laughs with us that he left us in good hands with each other. He moved on to bigger projects and to be reunited with those who he hadn’t visited with in a while, as they welcomed him with open arms. Oh the stories and laughs they are sharing now.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Hackberry. He worked at Mobil Oil through his career until retirement. He loved his family very much, always welcomed visitors, and was sure to walk you all the way down the driveway when you left. Any given day he could be found tinkering outside with anything that moved, including his love of working on lawnmowers, and watching a western movie that he had likely watched a dozen times.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Juanita Nunez of Hackberry; his children, Amanda Nunez (Keith Walker) of Cypress, Texas, and Marty Joseph Nunez; his sisters, Virginia (Norman) Jinks and Marie Little, both of Hackberry, and Lona Mae Hendricks of Ventress, LA; four grandchildren, Tristan (Cameron) Wonner, Derek Nunez, Laiken Riley, and Kiaya Berzas; and seven great-grandchildren, Rhylie, Rowdy, Paizlee, Daxon, Grayson, Collins, and Dakota. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pervy Joseph Nunez and Ophelia Duhon Nunez; and siblings, J.B. Nunez, Elton "Black" Nunez, Viola Broussard, and Mable Owen-Heitz.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 17 at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
