He was born in New Orleans, La., moved to Sulphur as a young boy and graduated from Sulphur High School in 1955. He attended Louisiana Tech University, and then pursued a long and successful career in outdoor advertising. He began his career in Opelousas, Louisiana, under the mentorship of W. A. Welch at Welch Outdoor Advertising before returning to his hometown of Sulphur with his family in 1972. He was an entrepreneur and owner of multiple advertising companies, including Hiway Ads, and Loup Sign Company for over 40 years. He also was a real estate developer in the Sulphur area.
Roy was elected to the Sulphur City Council and served from 1992-1996. He also served on the Ward Four Recreation Board. He was a long time member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, officiating the sports of football, baseball and basketball. He was honored by the LHSAA, also, as an official of two state high school playoffs. He was a dedicated coach, active participant, and sponsor of many softball, and baseball teams in his life time. He remained an avid Sulphur Tor Booster all of his life.
He is survived by his high school sweeheart and wife of 55 years, Patricia Gibson Loup; five children, Ellen Loup Little and husband Jim, Lisa Loup Jakel and husband Mark, Peter Loup and wife Oneida Kaye Marcantel Loup, and Kenneth Loup and wife Renee McGee Loup, all of Sulphur, and son Michael Loup of Houston, Texas. Roy was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Kristina and Sharmyn Little, Chad and Jenna Loup, Emily and Allison George, Jake and Blair Loup, and Ian Loup. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Rhena Loup O'Neal and husband Patrick, of Houston, Texas, and brother Roland Loup and wife, Rebecca of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy P. Loup, Sr., and Althe' Abadie Loup.
His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. The Rev. Joe Gosselin will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
