Yvonne's mother, Lily LaFleur, married M.C. Carlton when she was seven years old. They bonded as father and daughter and she began using Carlton in her name. She graduated from Sulphur High School in 1945 and was a member of the first S.H.S. marching unit, "The Whirlwinds". They were disbanded at the end of World War II. She had been employed in the lab at Firestone, and also worked for Breaux's Drugs and the City of Sulphur, where she retired in 1989. After her retirement, Yvonne did volunteer work for a number of years, especially as a Pink Lady at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. She traveled extensively, loved to read, sew, quilt, and cook for her family. Because she was an only child, she always wanted a large family. She considered her children her 'jewels'. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the icing on her cake of life.
Survivors include her sons, Richard Suarez, and Kim Suarez and wife, Pam; daughter-in-law, Denise Suarez; son-in-law, Eddie Bergeron; her sisters-in-law, Magaline Trahan and Earline Roberts, all of Sulphur; eight grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Roy Suarez; her father, Mentor Landry; mother, Lily Landry Carlton; step-father, M.C. Carlton; her daughter, Sherry Bergeron; her son, Ronny Suarez; and a grandson, Judd Suarez.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church. The Rev. Luke Krzanowski, M.S. will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary service at 6 p.m., followed by a Cursillo Rosary, and from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in her name. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
