Lois May Hopkins

Lois M. Hopkins, 89, passed away on February 4, 2013 in Poulsbo, WA. Lois was born on January 11, 1924 in Elwood, NE to Walter and May Major, growing up with four sisters and one brother. She had memories of their sod house, horse rides to school, and the school teacher living with them. Lois met her husband, Horace H. Hopkins, Jr., on a blind date when she lived in Richland, WA. Lois enjoyed mentioning they decided to get married after only a three-week courtship. While raising five children, Lois worked for a Hanford construction contractor, was secretary for a tax consultant, and was financial secretary at her church, West Side Church in Richland. During her fifty-year marriage to Horace, some of her joys were Seattle opera membership, community music events, camping, traveling, gardening and indoor plants, pie baking, helping friends with income tax preparation, sewing, and card playing. Throughout Lois' life her faith in God was at the core of who she was. That faith strengthened her in the face of life's challenges, gave her a love for singing hymns, and gave her stories of God's provision to pass on to her children. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ralph, her sister Maureen, and her husband Horace. She is survived by her children Sharon Hasty, Edwin Gragert, Bonnie Kenney, Kimberly (and John) Carlsen, and Kerri (and Fred) Siegenthaler, ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her sisters Vivian and Phyllis, and friends who will remember her warm, caring, giving spirit. Her children often heard nurses and other caregivers compliment her uncomplaining and sweet disposition. A special thank you goes out to the staff at Montclair Park in Poulsbo, WA for their excellent and compassionate care in her last few months of life, and to Life Care Connections, who gave her such loving care in Puyallup, WA for several years. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at Shepherd of the Hill Presbyterian Church, 8401 112th St. E, Puyallup, WA 98373, on February 23, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.
