Born March 18, 1917 in Okanogan, Washington; passed away January 7, 2012 in Puyallup, Washington. After a critical fall on Nov 25th, and many medical ups and downs, she died peacefully just weeks before her 95th birthday.
Marie was very sharp, loved her independence, was a two-time cancer survivor, and had many interests and creative gifts. She was an avid reader, worked daily crossword puzzles, and still played pinochle 2-3 times a week until her fall.
Marie was a longtime member of the White River Presbyterian Church in Auburn, where she faithfully served as church secretary for more than 20 years. She loved gardening and enjoyed watching, feeding, and identifying birds. She picked her own berries, creating many delicious desserts, and enjoyed producing (and drinking) her own home-made wine. She was an excellent cook. She also loved taking photos of her family, friends, and travels, and created scores of photo albums over the years. In addition to all this, she sewed at least 50 quilts and wall hangings of all sizes, many as cherished gifts for others. She passed on her love of creating sewing projects to more than one generation.
Most of all, Marie enjoyed spending time with her family, both near and far. She loved to share her talents, skills, and memories with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren – aspects of Marie that they hold close to their hearts. After losing her husband, Ray DeKay, in 1971, she became a leader and speaker in a regional widow/widowers support group. She met and married Waldo Carlson in 1986. They enjoyed 10 years together before his death in 1996.
Marie is survived by her children: Barbara DeKay Shull, Dianne DeKay Hickam, Larry DeKay, and Mary DeKay Skowronski, as well as 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, and her brother, Tom Myers, who continues to live in Sumner. She was preceded in death by her husbands; sisters, Henrietta and Elsie; brother-in-law, Jim Phillips, and sister-in-law, Dollie Myers. Marie DeKay Carlson was well loved and will be greatly missed.
There will be a “Celebration of Marie’s Life” Open House at Stafford Suites in Sumner (15519 – 62nd St. Ct. E.) on Saturday, January 21st, from 3PM – 4PM. Memorials may be sent to a Women’s Shelter of your choice; Marie donated to several over the years.
