Carl D. Werner was born March 6, 1926, and passed peacefully on February 18, 2018, just shy of his 92nd birthday. He was the youngest child of Carl E. Werner & Edna L. Werner (Boardman). His siblings were Eugene Werner and Maxine Werner. Born and raised in Battle Creek, Nebraska, his claim to fame was that he “probably played ball against Johnny Carson” who lived in neighboring Norfolk, and was the same age.
His family moved to Lincoln, but quickly on to Denver, where he graduated from Aurora Central. Carl served in the U.S. Navy for two years at the tail end of WWII; he was a signalman in the Pacific Theatre. After the war he returned to Denver where he began a 30-year career working for Wire Rope Corporation of America as a Warehouse Manager.
On December 19, 1954, Carl married Ruth Kathleen Fastenau. They had four children: Carl D., Jr (1956), Gary D. (’58), Edward D. (’60), and Phyllis K. (’62). They have two grandchildren: Brett D. (’83) and Andrew J. (’94), and one great grandchild: Braden (’09). Carl and Ruth were both faithfully devoted to their family and marriage, and to their Christian faith in God.
They moved to Sun City, AZ in 1983 and loved the new life it brought. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii; and even around the world, such as Canada, Europe (several times), Panama, and Thailand. They engaged in many of the Sun City activities, including Bridge and square dancing. But Carl’s passion always remained bowling, where his claim to fame was bowling the first 300 game in Sun City proper in November of 1985. Ruth passed away on December 31, 2012; they had been married 58 years.
