

Carlyle W. Peterson of Sun City, AZ, 97, passed away peacefully at his home to be with Jesus on Saturday, November 1, 2014. A Funeral Service will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday, November 9, at Sunland Lakeside Chapel Mortuary with burial at Sunland Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Sun City, AZ.
Carlyle was born on November 1, 1917 in Lake Mills, Iowa to Carl and Inga Peterson. As a teenager, he worked many jobs to help his family including delivering papers (Des Moines Register), and working in a Lake Mills local bakery.
He lived in Ames, Iowa from 1935-1948 while he was an undergraduate and then professor in the Engineering Department at ISU. After moving to Ames, he discovered the love of his life, Anna Marie Nosback at church. He married Anna Marie on June 29, 1941 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church just after graduating from Iowa State with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Carlyle and Anna Marie moved to Des Moines in 1948 and founded Peterson Engineers in 1952. As a structural engineer, Carlyle’s influence can be found on many buildings in the Des Moines area and throughout Iowa, including Veterans Auditorium and the Des Moines YMCA. In 2008, Carlyle and Anna Marie moved to Sun City to live with and near two of their children.
He was an avid stamp collector for the last 50 years and was very proud of his collection. He and Anna Marie owned an acreage near Martinsdale, Iowa from 1960-2000 where they hosted picnics, family outings, Boy Scout camps, and even a few hot air balloon landings.
Carlyle will be missed by his loving wife of 73 years, Anna Marie Peterson; children, Betty (Gerry) Hahn, Donald (Gail) Peterson, and Richard (Ann) Peterson; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 19 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Inga Peterson; brother, George Peterson; and sister, Irene Stemm.
