Dorothy Doris Hiatt passed on June 16, 2020. She was born November 9, 1927 in Carthage, Missouri, but grew up on a farm near Otis, Colorado. She graduated from High School at the age of 17. Recognizing a shortage of teachers due to World War II, she was issued a War Emergency Teaching Certificate after passing the Colorado Teaching Examination. She thus began her 27-year teaching career in a rural, one-room, 8-grade schoolhouse in Yuma County, Colorado. That fall she met and married Donald Hiatt, a veteran just returned from the war whose family had moved next door. In the early 1950s Colorado required teachers to earn 15 hours of college credit in order to be hired. Living in a rural area required evening drives of up to 40 miles one-way to attend the necessary classes, but Dorothy managed it. Through evening classes and summer school over 5 years, she earned her B.A. degree. In 1959 the family moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado, where she taught elementary school, continued her education, and received a Master’s Degree in School Administration with a Principal’s Certificate. In 1966 she was one of 30 teachers chosen nationally for a new Guidance and Counseling Training Program. She then started the first Elementary Guidance and Counseling Program in Colorado at the Poudre R-1 School District in Ft. Collins. She was active and served as President in the Fort Collins Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She retired in 1986 and spent winters in Arizona, eventually becoming a full-time resident of Sun City. She is survived by a sister: Peggy Schlechte-Boise, Idaho; Two Children: Anita Livingston-Golden CO and Gary Hiatt-Firestone, CO; Two Grandchildren: Lance Livingston-Arvada, CO and Michael Livingston-Charleston, SC; Six Great Grandchildren: Connor Livingston, Kelly Livingston, Kenna Livingston, and Aidan Livingston-Arvada, CO, and Samuel Livingston and Elanor Livingston-Charleston, SC. She was preceded in death by a Three Grandchildren: Eric Hiatt, Shawn Short and Susan Short; Two Husbands: Donald Hiatt and Dean Farnsworth. Interment will be in Sunland Memorial Park, Sun City, AZ.
