Gene Kuhlwein died Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at his home in Peoria, Arizona. Gene was born on January 25, 1930, in South Bloomfield, Ohio, to parents Carl and Evelyn Kuhlwein, and he grew up in nearby Columbus.
After high school, Gene joined the U.S. Marines and after training at Camp Pendleton in California, he served in Japan with the 3rd Marine Division. He was stationed at Camp Gifu and Camp Sakai in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in February of 1955, and he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in April of 1955.
On December 14, 1957, Gene married Mary Sager, and he traveled the world as a radio/radar specialist until July of 1973 when he retired from military service. Gene and Mary settled down in Phoenix where he worked from 1973-1986 for Universal Technical Institute (UTI) until his second retirement.
Gene was an avid golfer and he loved bowling, playing cards, and building models.
Gene is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Sager Kuhlwein, son Mark Kuhlwein and wife Delores of Glendale, Arizona; granddaughters Lacey Lowndes of Scottsdale, Arizona; Amanda Collins and husband Tommy of Phoenix, Arizona; stepdaughter Jeannie McDaniel and husband Joe of Tulsa, Oklahoma; stepson Tom Emptage and wife Lea of Glendale, Arizona; stepson Dennis Emptage and wife Kathy of Youngstown, Ohio, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A private graveside service honoring Gene Kuhlwein’s life will be held for family members.
