Harland Elton Carey

Harland Elton Carey, lover of family, animals, and justice completed his earthly journey September 7th, 2024. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends at the end of his life. Although the last couple of years were challenging, Harland’s life was full and meaningful. Born January 25th,1939 to Harland Elton Carey and Bonnie Elizabeth Finley Carey in Prineville

Oregon, he lived the first 12 years of his life on a small ranch with no electricity or indoor plumbing in Central Oregon. His family later moved to Tucson, where Harland and brother Steve graduated from high school. Harland later received a Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Utah. He came back to Tucson to complete a PhD in Political Science and later a JD both from the University of Arizona.

He and his first wife, Eileen raised three amazing daughters, Erin, Sydney, and Shannon. Later in life, Harland met his current wife of nearly 35 years, Patra.

Harland’s career spanned many fields. He was a political science professor at NAU and a staff attorney for the Arizona State Senate. Harland also had a thriving personal injury practice. Prior to retirement, he taught fifth grade at Capital Elementary School.

Harland loved writing historical fiction and belonged to a writing group for many years. He was a lapidary artist, keeping up the family tradition inherited from his father. He also volunteered in the community with his wife, Patra.

At the end of his life, in addition to his family, he was tenderly cared for by a wonderful care giver, Barbara, who quickly became a family friend. Harland is survived by his wife Patra, daughters Erin (Craig), Sydney, Shannon (Paul), grandchildren, Justin, Hannah (Ben), Jerica, Olivia, and Mike, and great-grand daughter Maeve, one more yet to arrive, brother Steve (Ginny), nephew Sean, niece Brittney, and former wife Eileen. The family would also like to thank the caring staff at Center of Arrowhead for the kindness you showed and the care you gave our beloved Harland. Words are not adequate to utter the missing we feel for you.
