Harper Samuel Harvey of Peoria, AZ passed away peacefully and unexpectedly May 4, 2017. Born July 27, 1932 in Albany, IL, Harper was the youngest of five children and an only son. A natural athlete, he competed in high school basketball and track before joining the Air Force. He was stationed in St. Johns, Newfoundland and El Paso, TX. He played Air Force basketball during his military service.
Harper married Marcel Whitson in 1957 – together they had three children. In 1962 he joined the Fuller Brush Co. and in 1965 the family moved to Phoenix, AZ. Harper remained with Fuller Brush for many years moving into management. After becoming a widower, Harper married Jean Jones in 1978. In the 1980’s he joined Storer Communications which became Republic Cable, then Dimension Cable, and finally Cox Communications where he retired as a sales manager 20 years ago.
In retirement, he worked part-time as a host for Tony Roma’s in Peoria and Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon in Glendale. An avid mall walker, he made many friends at Arrowhead Mall and was well known there.
Harper had an amiable personality and a great sense of humor that endeared him to everyone. He also had a keen understanding of sports, particularly baseball and basketball. Harper also loved music, especially classic country. November 2016, he joined 27 other residents on the first Arizona Honor Flight to include Korean War Veterans.
Harper is survived by his children Harper (Gene), Linda and Joyce; grandchildren Katrina, Megan, Adam and Kaitlyn; five great grandchildren, and two stepsons.
