

John James McGarvey of Sun City West went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 7, 2015. A native of Yonkers, NY, he was born December 26, 1931 to John Joseph McGarvey and Elizabeth M. Flanagan McGarvey. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School, and served as an enlisted sailor on navy destroyers before being accepted into the NROTC program at Penn State University where he was commissioned a supply corps officer. He proudly served our nation from 1949 to 1977, serving on ten ships and numerous shore stations during both the Korean and Vietnam wars, and retiring with the rank of commander.
A pioneer in data systems management and holder of MS and Ph.D. (ABD) degrees and numerous certifications, he went on to successful careers as a consultant and as an adjunct professor at colleges and universities including the University of California, Berkeley, University of Maryland, Golden Gate University, and the California State University Hayward and San Francisco campuses. He is listed in Who’s Who in the Frontiers of Science and Technology. A gifted and diligent mentor, he was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and a genuine sense of joy that enriched all those around him.
He is survived by his spouse of fifty-seven years, Patricia Ann McGarvey, his sister Marie Stahl, his children Daniel, Mike, and Tim McGarvey and Sheila Kreifels, and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Sunland Memorial Park Mortuary-Lakeside Chapel, 15826 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85351.
