Joseph Robert MacDonald, a dedicated public servant, decorated veteran, and beloved family man, passed away on January 31, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 78. Known as Bob or Bobby in his childhood, he would later be known as Joe or Joe Mac. To his daughters, he would also be known as Dad.
Born on June 29, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, Joe dedicated his life to service. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1965 and served with distinction until his retirement as a Boatswain's Mate Senior Chief (BMCS) at the age of 60. A Vietnam veteran, he later joined the Detroit Police Department’s Mounted Division and the Underwater Recovery Team. His heroism earned him numerous accolades, including the national "Top Cop" award in 1994, the Coast Guard Medal, and the Key to The Coast Guard City USA for lifesaving actions at Station Belle Isle. Following his retirement from law enforcement in 1995, Joe worked in security at Walt Disney World before ultimately retiring again & relocating to Arizona to be closer to his daughters.
Aside from his professional accomplishments, his interests and his impact knew no bounds. He could do anything. He was a fierce Detroit Police Hockey player, a scuba diving instructor, a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer for the Police Athletic League and high school Dad’s Club. He loved his animals, many of which were rescues, and he was the neighbor always quick to lend a helping hand.
Those who knew Joe remember him not only for his bravery but also for his kindness, goofy sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to others. He had a way of making people feel valued—a rare gift that endeared him to so many throughout his life. His loss leaves a void that can never be filled but also a legacy that will never be forgotten.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Victoria (North) MacDonald; daughters Patricia MacDonald and Jennifer (MacDonald) Dolan; sister Carolyn MacDonald; grandsons Searc St. John and Bishop St. John; and son-in-law Joseph "Bo" Dolan.
