Karen "Susie" Gray, born June 30, 1951, passed away on May 31, 2026, at the age of 74. A beloved sister, aunt, and friend, she will be remembered with deep respect and enduring affection by all who knew her.
Born in Oberlin, Ohio, Karen Sue was the daughter of Richard Herron and Theda Mae Vickers. From childhood onward, she was known lovingly as “Susie,” a name that remained with her throughout her life among family and friends. In 1959, Susie moved with her family to Phoenix, Arizona, and in 1963 they relocated to Big Bear Lake, California. She graduated from high school in 1969, went on to attend college, and earned her degree—an early reflection of the steady determination and work ethic that would define her years to come.
Susie built a long and dedicated career as a medical coder, serving various doctors and hospitals. Through decades of diligent work, she became someone others could rely on—consistent, capable, and resilient. She continued in her profession until retiring in 2018, closing a chapter marked by commitment and perseverance.
On June 11th, 1989, Susie married Kevin Gray. They remained married until their separation in November of 2004. In 2007, she moved to Sun City, Arizona, to be closer to family, and she enjoyed her years there both before and after retirement. She also very much enjoyed going to Disneyland. Susie’s life was rooted in care for those around her; she loved her family and friends, and though she never had children, she found comfort and companionship in spending time with her cats.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Heron Vickers (January 6th, 1995) and Theda Mae Vickers (February 22, 2026); and her brother, Ronald Mark Vickers (December 9, 1957).
She is survived by her brothers and sister in law’s Richard Allen Vickers, Russell Lee and Pam Vickers, and Mark and Marye Vickers. Susie is also remembered by 2 nephews, Kenny and Mark Vickers, and one niece, Melissa Vickers.
A kind-hearted and deeply cherished woman, Susie touched many lives through her steady presence and her willingness to help those in need. Her devotion to family and her quiet strength will not be forgotten, and she will be profoundly missed.
A Memorial & Celebration of Life will be held at Sunland Mortuary, Sunland Room, 15826 N. Del Webb Blvd, Sun City, AZ 85351, on June 23, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.
