Lawrence L Snowden went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 28, 2022. He was a treasured dad, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle and cousin, and the youngest of three sons to Leslie and Edith Snowden. Lawrence lived most of his life in Colorado, he graduated from Steamboat High School where he lettered in both football and basketball each year. He joined the army after graduating and completed basic training and medical school at Ft Bragg, NC, where he served as a Medic Dispensary Sargent 1st Class in the 82 Airborne. He earned his Jump Wings and medals for Rifle Marksmanship and Good Conduct.
Lawrence came back to Colorado after his time in the service. He had one daughter, then met and married Jeanne and they lived in Steamboat for over 30 years. Ever present in raising his daughter, they enjoyed great times in the outdoors boating, waterskiing, snowmobiling, riding horses and camping. Once he became a grandpa, he cherrished his granddaughters and made endless trips to AZ for any occasion, seeing them playing their sports or to watch their piano and singing performances. He was very proud of them and was such an integral part of their lives, and they adored their grandpa.
His careers all had a common denominator of building, first working to build tunnels and roads, then working many years in commercial / residential construction in Steamboat for Maher-Bonny Construction. In 1974 Lawrence went to work for the Energy Fuels Coalmine, where he held many positions there starting as a bulldozer operator, then to a dragline foreman where he worked with the contractors to build the 8050 dragline, at that time it was one of the largest draglines in the western US. Once the draglines were built, Lawrence was promoted to the Reclamation supervisor, overseeing 10 foremen and their crews.
His favorite hobbies included boating, traveling, fishing and anything to do with horses from riding broncs in his younger years, to shoeing horses, hunting on horseback, driving horse teams and feeding cattle at the ranch by sleigh with a team of Percheron horses.
Upon retiring, he and Jeanne relocated to Grand Junction CO, there he had a workshop and mastered leatherworking and braiding, making many saddles, ornate bridles, riding chaps as well as holsters and belts. Lawrence was beloved by many and known for his guidance, patience, strength as well as his humor and witty comebacks. The last 2 years, his family was blessed to have him with them in AZ, where he loved the sunshine, kept the faith and fought a good fight.
Lawrence is survived by his daughter Jolene (Lawrence) Roberts, granddaughters; Andrea (Mike) Flucker and Alisha (Alex) Altiveros and three grandchildren Olivia, Brody and Xander, all of AZ. He is also survived by his brother Leo Snowden, niece Ramona Green, nephews; Chris Snowden, Ron Snowden, Russ Snowden, Rod Snowden and Bob Snowden and cousins; Leland Workman and Bud Snowden.
Lawrence and Jeanne were married for 55 years prior to her passing in 2020, he is also preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard, sister Leota and close nephew William.
We are forever grateful for him and all the wonderful memories, he will continue to be honored as a light and inspiration for his family. A celebration will be scheduled next spring in Colorado.
