Linda was born on September 21, 1959 in Sumter, South Carolina. Linda is the daughter of late Charles and Phyllis McDevitt. Her family is also to include her younger brother Joey McDevitt. Her brother Joey was born in 1961 in Tachikawa, Japan, where the McDevitt family was stationed for a few years. Linda and Joey were constantly moving when they were young children because her father was a member of the United States Air Force.
The McDevitt family planted roots in Holbrook, Arizona shortly before Linda and Joey started high School. Charles, the jack of all trades, worked for the telephone company. Before Youtube he taught himself how to build houses, and later completed/sold those homes in Holbrook. Phyllis was a school teacher who taught for many years at the local elementary school in Holbrook. Holbrook is where Linda would meet her lifetime partner Hardy, in 1973 they started dating when she was 15 years old. Linda graduated high school from Holbrook High school in 1977. After graduation, her parents Charles and Phyllis wanted Linda to attend a college University. Linda chose Arizona State University in Phoenix- a far cry from the small town Holbrook which she was used to. Meanwhile, Hardy was attending Haskell University in Lawrence Kansas on a scholarship for baseball and academics. Distance couldn’t keep these two lovebirds apart, Hardy and Linda got married in 1979 in Holbrook and then moved back to Kansas so Hardy could finish his degree. In 1981, Hardy and Linda moved back to Holbrook where they started their family- Jessica born in 1981, Elyse born in 1985, and Paul born in 1988. Hardy began his career at APS when his first daughter Jessica was born, as Linda was a stay at home mom to her three children. In 1993 Hardy took a job transfer with APS to Phoenix, this relocation to the big city would be where they planted their roots once more and watched their children and then grandchildren grow up. They truly did create a beautiful life together.
Linda is survived by her three children, grandchildren, and brother Joey. Her daughter Jessica and husband Brian have two children- Ava (10) and Elijah (7). Elyse has a life with her partner Benji, and Paul has four amazing children Rylee (11), Jaxson (7), Koda Kai (3), and Alaia (1).
Linda was a sweet soul, always there for her family and children. She was a loving Mom- a daily phone call Mom, and the best hug giver when you needed it. She was an encourager and supporter of her children throughout life. Both she and Hardy did a tremendous job in shaping all of her children into the strong adults they are today, the Sulu bond they created will remain on earth while they are in heaven watching over.
Linda loved her grandchildren and was so excited to watch them grow. She was known as “Grandma” and when asked by some of her grandchildren what they would miss they said-
“Her smile, her eyes, her hugs, her laugh, her love, her crafts, and her sneaking treats of candy”. Each one of her grandchildren loved her simply and wholeheartedly and she loved them right back the same.
Linda was a great wife, mother, daughter, sister, and auntie who will be missed immensely each and every day.
While her life on this earth was much too short, we know she is back where she belongs in her husband Hardy’s arms.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sunlandmemorial.com for the Sulu family.
